What Do We Know About Turbochargers?

Published by Author in category Autos, Cars, Bikes | Leave a Comment

It is already a well-known fact that a turbocharger adds approximately 35-40 per cent of power to a car engine. This makes turbocharged vehicles significantly faster, if to compare them with ordinary cars.

In fact, turbocharging is something that everyone has heard about, some lucky car enthusiasts use it, since they have bought the last models released where the turbochargers are already installed. And there are those who dream of installation a turbocharger under the hood – the principal problem for them is to find sufficient funds, because the installation of a turbo kit will require a round sum (thousands of dollars).
And now a few facts that are not so well-known.
The first turbo was invented at the beginning of 20th century by the Swiss engineer Alfred Buchi. At first diesel ships got it installed. A little later it was introduced in the automotive industry.
The principal function of a turbocharger is to add more power to the engine of a vehicle. In other word, a turbocharger allows to obtain a car of high speed potential without substituting the engine with a bigger one. A turbocharger draws in large air volumes at fast rates and this allows to substantially improve fuel/air mixture ratio.
And here is something that is actually well-known by very often forgotten by many: an engine’s performance is based on fuel / air mixture. It breathes in the air and uses the fuel to generate the energy. As a result, it runs the engine and its internal parts in charge of the wheels and driveshaft operation.

Obviously a turbocharger is responsible for the drawing in bigger air volumes to add an engine more performance. A turbocharger consists of a compressor and turbine that are connected by a shared axis. The exhaust gases are directed at the turbine entry by the exhaust manifold that causes turning the turbine wheel. The compressor which compresses the air and sends it to the engine air intake is driven by the turning turbine.

Now there are many cars with already built-in turbos. You can recognize such a car by Turbo Diesel Injection (TDI) sign or Twincharger Supercharged Injection (TSI) sign. But if you are not too lucky to buy the last released model, you can undertake to install a turbocharger into your car. But be sober – this will be a costly treat because not only the turbocharger will be installed.

A cooling and pressure control system will be installed in addition to a turbocharger itself – it is necessary for proper performance of a converted car and protection the engine from quick wearing out. So, you will have to find a professional car mechanic who will take care of the complicated turbo system installation.

Long time ago automobile turned into not only a vehicle but also a luxury and entertainment object. Many car owners want to have high-powered sport car but not everybody can afford it.
