Board of Education Commissioners
San Francisco Board of Education
555 Franklin Street
San Francisco, CA 94102
Dear Commissioners,
I understand that school enrollment figures and fiscal concerns have placed the School District in the unenviable position of having to make difficult decisions that will impact children, families, and communities across the city.
As the state representative of Assembly District 13, the eastern portion of San Francisco, I will continue to fight in Sacramento for increased education funding to help all our children get the education they deserve.
However, I was extremely concerned to learn that the majority of the proposed school closures and mergers are located within the 13th Assembly District. When considering the proposed school closures and mergers, it is important to consider the significant impact on some of our city’s most underserved minority communities, in particular the children. Such relocations and interruptions can be detrimental not only children, but to families and the fabric of our diverse neighborhoods.
I encourage the Board to explore alternative solutions and suggestions from the San Francisco Unified School District, community leaders, and school parents as you consider the prospect of school closures and mergers.
Education is an endless investment in our children’s future and in the growth of our community. Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (415) 557-3013.
Sincerely,
MARK LENO
Assemblyman, 13th District
